Borders’s new affiliate marketing programme looks to have got off to a healthy start, signing up more than 150 website within a week.

The bookseller’s eight per cent introductory commission offer on sales of CDs, DVDs and magazines seems to have been a substantial enough sweetner.

However, according to Claire Bending, online marketing executive at Borders, websites stand to gain more than just a financial reward.

“They will also have the chance to work with a passionate and original brand which has made a strategic move towards becoming a real destination store in its own right,” she told the Bookseller.

Successful though the Borders’ latest digital marketing venture may be however, it looks like it has some way to go before it catches up with other high street retailers.

House of Fraser’s online acquisition manager, Chris Bishop recently underlined the company’s intention to become have “the best retail affiliate marketing programme in the UK next year”.

I do think that fast food firms should take a little more responsibility (although I admit I do like a burger from time to time). As with any area of marketing; people push the limits of what they can get away with before someone finally stands up and tells them to back down a bit.
