SMG look to boost online marketing revenue

Scottish broadcaster SMG is hoping to boost its digital marketing revenue when it launches its new online media player, it has been revealed.

The new on-demand television service will allow users to watch TV shows over the internet, which the company hopes to support with a classified advertising campaign.

Although this will be a new venture for the firm, developers remain confident that revenue from the new online marketing will reach £2.5 million by 2010.

SMG also hopes that it can increase unique visits to the player, available at stv.tv, to 30,000 per day, reports the Sunday Herald.

Head of digital marketing, Alistair Brown, claims that the new player will “stand up” to the BBC iPlayer rival.

He said: “The iPlayer is a huge undertaking, and I’m a big user, but I believe we have produced something that stands up against it.

“We SMG are no BBC, but in terms of quality it stands up.”

SMG’s new player will feature a blend of ITV and content exclusive to Scottish television.

The comments follow the announcement last month that the broadcaster is to embark on a new rebranding campaign, changing its name to stv Group.
