No more phone directories campaign launched on Facebook

A group of UK residents have launched a Facebook group campaign to promote their view on print phone directories.

In our environmentally conscious times, it is strange that consumers do tolerate the production and what is essentially unsolicited dissemination of the Gorrilas of direct marketing - the phone book.

“When was the last time you used a paper directory?”, asks one of the group’s members, pointing out that with the ease of access to the Internet for most of the UK population, paper directories are becoming somewhat redundant.

Personally, I remember my student years, moving around a lot from flat to flat and in each place seeing a pile of dusty old Yellow Pages laying in a cupboard unused.  Even today, I don’t think I’ve used a print directory in over 5 years - in fact I don’t think I’ve even picked up my copy when the “distributor” dumps a dozen of them in my communal stairs.

There’s got to be a lot of waste produced in keeping households stocked up with these print directories - shouldn’t they be opt-in for consumers anyway?
