Sales online are outperforming those on the high street, according to new research.

The most recent figures from the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index show a 13 per cent year-on-year growth for online shopping in February as the sector continues to grow despite casualties on the high street.

“Consumers are still turning to the internet to make their purchase decisions and ensure their disposable income goes further,” commented Mike Petevinos, head of consulting for retail at Capgemini UK.

There is variation in the growth of different sectors, with sales in beers, wines and spirits rising by 30 per cent in February, while the clothing, footwear and accessories as well as the electrical sector are expanding at a greater rate than the overall e-Retail market, according to the figures.

Last month, the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index showed that spending in January increased by 19 per cent in comparison to the year before.
