Firms should be selective about web content

Small firms should be selective when hosting media content on their websites in order to make sure that their resources are being used efficiently, an expert has advised.

According to Thomas Herbert, product manager at Hostway, businesses should look carefully at how much money they are able to spend and how much they will make back from their site.

He added that in the absence of a big server network, companies should for example, consider putting video clips of their top five products on to their website rather than one for every product.

“You should narrow it down according to how many people are going to be accessing your website and how optimum it’s going to be, then just look at the technologies on how you are going to build your website,” Mr Herbert said.

According to statistics from Verdict Research, online retail sales are set to increase by almost 40 per cent to £7 billion this Christmas, underlining the importance of firms offering multi-channel retailing to their customers.
