PRS for Music ‘outraged’ at Google decision

PRS for Music has said that it is “outraged” for consumers and songwriters after Google chose to close down access to music videos on YouTube in the UK - something that may affect advertisers too.

The body revealed it had not been consulted on the decision and has urged Google to reconsider the decision as quickly as possible.

It said Google had told PRS for Music that it is taking the measure as it wishes to pay a lot less than it does at the minute to writers of the music on which their service relies.

This is despite a significant rise in YouTube viewing, the body commented.

“We were shocked and disappointed to receive a call late this afternoon informing us of Google’s drastic action which we believe only punishes British consumers and the songwriters,” explained Steve Porter, chief executive officer for PRS for Music.

YouTube reported that it is still working with PRS for Music as they try to reach mutually acceptable terms for a new license.
